When I became a landlord, I was focused on lowering my costs as much as possible. Renting a dumpster and having it placed in your driveway will be handy when you have a major project to tackle at home. Whether it's a renovation or you're finally making it a priority to clean out your cluttered house, renting a dumpster will make the process of removing waste easy and convenient. You want to limit the risk that the dumpster begins to smell offensively, though, especially if the weather is hot and the dumpster is sitting in your driveway for a long period of time. Things such as food waste should always go in your curbside garbage bin, not the dumpster; here are some other strategies you can do to reduce the risk of the dumpster smelling bad.
Seal What You Can
Even if you're making sure not to place any food scraps in the dumpster, there will likely be things that you place in the bin that do smell. This can often be the case if you're doing a renovation after flood damage, for example, or when you're cleaning up an overly cluttered home. Do your best to carefully seal items that pose a risk of smelling strongly — the last thing you want to experience is your neighbors smelling the dumpster. If you have something that smells strongly, place it in a heavy-duty plastic bag; you can also consider double-bagging such items. When you place the bag in the dumpster, be sure to do so carefully so that it doesn't rip open on something sharp.
Keep The Dumpster Drain Open
Dumpsters are equipped with drains in the bottom to allow you to remove any water that builds up when it rains. It's a good idea to open this drain right away. When rain mixes with garbage, things can quickly begin to smell bad. With the drain removed, rain might soak the dumpster contents but at least the contents won't be sitting in stagnant water — and things will be able to dry soon after the rain stops falling.
Sprinkle The Contents
In some cases, you'll begin to notice a smell coming from the dumpster. This can often be the case when the weather is hot and sunny. Visit your local home improvement store or general merchandise store and buy a box of garden lime or cat litter. Both of these powdery substances are effective for odor removal. Sprinkle the contents of the dumpster with either of these powders; in some cases, you might wish to buy multiple boxes. Either way, you'll be quelling the odor until the dumpster rental service hauls away the dumpster when you're done with it.
