Saving Money On Energy

When I became a landlord, I was focused on lowering my costs as much as possible. I did my research and discovered that one of the best ways to do that would be to invest in higher-quality electronics that didn't consume as much power. I was really impressed with a few of the appliances on the market, and so I invested in them for my apartment building. After tenants moved in, they offered a lot of compliments for how well their appliances were working. It was awesome to see myself saving so much money on something that would otherwise go down the drain. Check out this blog for much more information on energy and environmentally-friendly practices.

Cigarettes And Plumbing Don't Mix

Lucas Lopez

You already know that cigarettes are bad for you. Everyone you know and some that you don't have told you to stop the habit. While cigarettes are bad for human plumbing, often leading to heart disease, they are also terrible for your actual home plumbing. You can also contribute to pollution of the water table. So,if you smoke, keep the butts out of your pipes.

Sewer Systems

You are either on a municipal or a septic tank system. You should not flush cigarette butts down either of them for several reasons. The nicotine can easily go from your home into the water table, meaning you are helping to poison the environment every time you dispose of your cigarettes in your home's plumbing. Nicotine in low levels is not harmful to most people, but the effect on children and pregnant women is not known. As a result, you need to help keep the water free of nicotine in case it is harmful to others.

Pipes

Cigarettes are hard on pipes and garbage disposals. They are not biodegradable, so they can hurt the garbage disposal blades. They can also get trapped inside your pipes when you flush them. If they make it into a septic tank, they can ultimately cause problems there since they accumulate without breaking down for months or years. In fact, cigarette butts can take up to 10 years to degrade. If you smoke a pack a day and even a fourth of them go into your home pipes, you are asking for a significant plumbing issue. Having a plumber clean them out of your pipes can be an expensive endeavor.

Disposal

You have several options for proper disposal of cigarette butts. You should make sure they are completely extinguished before you place them in the garbage. Of course, this method means you are adding to the overflowing landfills in this country. Instead, you can try and find a cigarette recycling program in your area. Most of these are in large cities, but do your research before you give up on this option.

You know that smoking is a terrible habit, but your health choices are up to you. However, you do need to be responsible when it comes to disposing of your cigarette butts in order to protect the environment. It that is not motivation enough, your septic tank can be adversely affected if you are not careful. Starting today, put your cigarette butts where they belong.
